Why do I vermicompost?

A couple of years ago I was returning home from a summer fishing trip and I was struck with the question of what to do with my leftover worms. Up to that point I had either given them to other fishermen that had not given up for the day or I dumped them out in the flower bed, hoping they would do some good. I wondered what you would need to do, to keep worms at home and be ready to go fishing at a moment’s notice. This led me to research online and at the book store. That is where I came across Mary Appelhof’s Worms Eat My Garbage, the first of many books I have read on home vermicompsoting, and I still think it’s the best. It was the message of ecology and waste reduction that really resonated with me. I thought, here was something “green” I could do. My focus changed from having worms for fishing to recycling waste into an excellent organic soil enhancer. My time for fishing in the last year has been seriously lacking, but my family has made big strides in how much less waste we send to the landfill. Not only did we start vermicomposting, thereby making use of all our organic kitchen scraps, but we also began recycling our other household “waste”. I envy those of you who live in regions with curb side recycling (You have no excuse!). In our area, the county has several recycling collection centers where you can drop of your pre-sorted recycling. This is not bad at all, once you are used to it. But to a newcomer there are lots of questions and reasons not to take the initiative. The pay off is in the small steps taken by individuals to make our world better.
Here are the reasons I have worms:
I can reduce my family’s waste
I can make the best organic fertilizer you can get
Any chance I get to go fishing I don’t need to stop by the bait store!
I can help others learn about this process so they can experience the same benefits
Worms are cool!
 You can have worms too!
